If you have a temporary residence permit to participate in a Federal Voluntary Service and would like to continue the Federal Voluntary Service beyond the time limit, you can apply for an extension of your residence permit.
If you have a residence permit for the purpose of participating in the Federal Voluntary Service, this is usually limited to the planned end of your Federal Voluntary Service. If you intend to continue your Federal Voluntary Service beyond the originally planned end, you must apply for an extension of your residence permit. The Federal Voluntary Service is usually carried out for a period of 12 consecutive months. In exceptional cases, it can be extended to a period of up to 24 months. This also applies to the residence permit.
- Recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute)
- Current biometric passport photo (45 x 35 mm)
- Original agreement with the receiving institution for the implementation of the Federal Voluntary Service (with job description, information on the duration of the voluntary service, working hours, working conditions, supervision, remuneration and any training measures included)
- written agreement on the extension of the Federal Voluntary Service
- Before the age of 18: consent of the legal guardian
- You have a recognized and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute)
- You are already completing a federal voluntary service.
- You have agreed with the host institution to extend your service.
- There is no legally regulated reason for refusal (for example, you should not be one of the persons who enjoy international protection in Germany, who have applied for international protection, whose deportation is temporarily suspended or who have been granted temporary protection; nor should the institution receiving you have been founded solely for the purpose of facilitating the entry and residence of foreigners).
- You have adequate health insurance coverage.
- There is no interest in deporting you.
- Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.

- Find out whether the office responsible for your application allows you to submit your application online or has a special application form. In Hamburg, the application can be submitted online.
- You submit your application.
- The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any necessary documents or information from you.
- The responsible office will contact you to arrange an appointment.
- During the appointment, your identity and documents will be checked (please bring your documents, preferably in the original, with you to the appointment).
- If your application is approved, your fingerprints will be taken to produce a new electronic residence permit (eAT card).
- You pay the applicable fees.
- The Federal Printing Office will be commissioned to produce your new eAT card.
- Once completed, you will receive information and can collect the residence permit in the form of the eAT card in person.
- If your application is rejected, you will receive a rejection letter. In this case, you will also have to pay an administration fee.
You should expect processing to take 6-8 weeks. If you submit all the required documents in full and well prepared, processing may be quicker. After approval, it will then take another 4-6 weeks for the Federal Printing Office to produce your electronic residence permit.
You should submit your application at least 6-8 weeks before your original residence permit expires.
You can lodge an appeal against a rejection with the department within one month of notification.
