Would you like to take in a foster child? Then you must qualify as a foster parent.

In certain cases, you as a foster carer need a permit to take in a foster child. To get the permit, you have to apply and qualify. If you want to become a foster carer as part of child-rearing assistance provided by the youth welfare office, you do not need a permit. However, the responsible authority will check your suitability as a foster carer according to the same criteria.

• The decisive factor for accepting a child into general full-time care is a match between the child's needs and the existing skills and resources of the carers. Carers providing this type of care are not expected to have professional qualifications in a nursing or educational profession.
• As a foster carer, you must complete the foster care service's qualifying courses before starting your work.
• A professional or semi-professional background is expected for the admission of a child with special educational needs. In this context, semi-professional backgrounds include, for example, previous care of a foster child for a period of at least two years or long-term care and support of children and young people in a voluntary capacity.
• Foster parents can be couples with or without children of their own, as well as individuals with a stable social network.

• They must also submit an application. They can do this using the “Carer” form.

The task of integrating a child who is initially a stranger into your own family, of providing a home for them in the long term or permanently, of supporting them and raising them, is a demanding task. This should not and does not have to be done by you alone. The foster family is instead part of a supportive network that has pedagogical knowledge, methodological competence and many years of experience.
