Primary school in Hamburg ends after the 4th grade and your child moves on to the 5th grade of a secondary school. This can be a district school, a grammar school and, if there is a need for special educational support, also a regional education and advisory center (ReBBZ) or a special special school. To do this, you register your child yourself at a secondary school of your choice. To give you an idea of which type of school is most suitable for your child, all students receive an assessment of their further school career in the context of their previous learning and performance development and their interdisciplinary skills with their 4th grade half-yearly report. On this basis and, if necessary, in-depth specialist and educational advice from the class teacher and other teachers, you decide which type of school your child should attend after primary school (parental right to choose). When registering, you can state your first choice school as well as second and third choices and also specify school types that differ from your first choice. If none of your wishes can be fulfilled, your child will be allocated a place at a school that corresponds to the type of school chosen.

There are no costs involved.

You can submit the registration documents for secondary school, which your child receives together with the half-yearly report in grade 4, to any secondary school.

• You must submit the completed and signed registration form to a secondary school of your choice within the registration period
  • You can submit your registration in person and, if necessary, seek advice from the school.
  • Some schools set registration dates for this purpose.
  • It is also possible to register in writing; please note the postal delivery times.

• The Authority for Schools and Vocational Education allocates the registered pupils to the schools in accordance with the legal requirements and taking into account the school preferences expressed.

Acceptance notices are usually sent to the legal guardians by the end of April.

The registration process usually takes place at the beginning of February in the week after the half-yearly reports are issued. The exact deadlines are set by the School and Vocational Education Authority and these are always stated on the registration form that is given to the fourth-grade students together with their half-yearly reports.
