Do you have a university degree and would like to pursue a job in Germany that qualifies you for? Here's how to obtain a residence permit.
A residence permit for employment as a skilled worker with academic training gives you access to the labor market in Germany.
You can apply for a residence permit if you have completed a university degree. If you don't have a German university degree, your degree must either be recognized or comparable to a German university degree. You can obtain recognition or a determination of comparability before entering Germany.
This residence permit is a temporary residence permit.
- When entering with an appropriate visa: valid passport with visa
- If there is a previous stay with a residence permit for another purpose: valid passport and residence permit
- current biometric photo in digital form (can be taken on site)
- "Declaration of Employment Relationship" form completed and signed by the employer
- Original certificate of successfully completed higher education
- if available:
- Notice regarding the recognition or comparability of the university degree
- Certificate evaluation by the Central Office for Foreign Education
- for regulated professions: your professional qualification (e.g. license to practice or professional permit)
- Current registration certificate
- if necessary: professional license
- Proof of your health insurance
- rental agreement
- You have
- a German university degree, or
- a recognized foreign university degree, or
- a foreign university degree that is comparable to a German university degree.
- You have a job or a job offer for qualified employment in Germany.
- The Federal Employment Agency has approved the start of employment (approval is usually obtained from the responsible body).
- If you are 45 years or older, you must be able to prove that you earn a certain minimum salary or have sufficient pension provision.
- If necessary, you have a professional license (e.g. license to practice medicine)
- You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage from your income without relying on public benefits.
- There is no interest in deporting you.
- You have a recognized and valid passport or passport substitute
- You use the online service to apply for a residence permit and upload the required documents.
- The responsible office will then send you an appointment for an interview.
- Please bring all necessary documents, preferably in original, to the appointment.
- The responsible authority will check your identity and documents.
- The competent authority shall involve other authorities where necessary.
- If your application is approved, your fingerprints, signature and a biometric photo will be taken to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT).
- The responsible authority commissions an external agency, the Federal Printing Office, to produce your eAT.
- As soon as the eAT is ready, you will receive a notification and can pick it up in person from the responsible office. The responsible office will schedule an appointment for you.
- If the application is rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reasons for the rejection.
Processing will begin immediately at the appointment if all documents are complete. The delivery time for the electronic residence permit from the Federal Printing Office is typically two to four weeks.
Apply for a residence permit: at least 8 weeks before your visa or residence permit expires.
For permanent employment contracts, the residence permit is issued for four years and can be extended.
