If your driver's license has been lost (e.g., lost, stolen) or needs to be replaced for other reasons (e.g., because it has become illegible), you must apply for a replacement license.
A replacement driver's license must be applied for if the previous one has been lost, stolen or has become illegible, for example.
The application for the issuance of a replacement driver's license must be submitted to the competent office by the driver's license holder in person, in writing or on record. The requested driver's license may also be collected by a person authorized in writing; the replacement driver's license may also be mailed upon request.

- Application must be made in person (as the signature must be in the presence of the official).
- Collection can be made by a person authorized in writing. The replacement driver's license can also be sent (against reimbursement of postage costs).
- If no replacement driver's license is applied for, the person concerned must relinquish the driver's license; § 25 (4) FeV.
- There is no provisional driver's license, but a "fee-based exemption".
- When the new driver's license is issued, the previous driver's license loses its validity. If the lost driver's license is recovered, it must be returned immediately to the responsible driver's license authority.
