The range of topics covered by official statistics is broad: Population, social affairs, the economy, finance and the environment are just some of the overarching topics for which data is regularly collected. The surveys are carried out in different ways. The cooperation of a large number of institutions, companies and individuals is required. They are asked to participate in writing.

Participation in official statistics surveys is usually not voluntary, but required by law. The effort for respondents is kept to a minimum: Modern online reporting procedures help to reduce the burden on respondents and ensure data processing without media discontinuity.
