The aim of the Werkschule is to enable young people to acquire the extended vocational training maturity in a three-year course of education. The aim is to acquire, consolidate and improve basic skills, secure career choice competence, acquire social competencies and psychosocial stability, and acquire the ability to complete vocational training.
The course is generally affiliated with vocational schools and comprises grades 9 to 11. At the end of grade 11, the Erweiterte Berufsbildungsreife can be acquired. At the end of grade 10 or grade 11, the simple vocational training maturity is obtained with a certain set of grades.
Students in the Werkschule are expected to achieve the Erweiterte Berufsbildungsreife if possible. For many young people, however, the main goal is to reawaken their lost motivation to learn and to enable them to experience learning again as an individually meaningful and valuable maturation process. The way to achieve this is through the experience of self-efficacy and personal responsibility. Only then will young people be motivated to start and successfully complete an apprenticeship. Alongside the formal school-leaving certificate, the attainment of training skills is the second major goal of the Werkschule.
Lessons at the Werkschule are project-oriented, combining theoretical and practical components. The students' reading skills are systematically promoted. Social pedagogical support is an integral part of the Werkschule.
A condition for admission to the Werkschule is a previously conducted counseling interview. After that, the application and selection process takes place. The application must be sent directly to the selected Werkschule by May 31 of each year at the latest. Applications are open to students in the 8th grade, and to students with special educational needs in the areas of learning, language, and behavior from the 9th grade.
