Would you like to register your child for the 5th grade at a school in Bremerhaven?

You have the choice between secondary school and grammar school. Choosing the type of school is a responsible decision in which you will be supported by the school. For this reason, your elementary school will offer you parent-teacher conferences at the mid-year change in year 4. Take the opportunity to have the teachers explain your child's requirements for learning at lower secondary level and discuss in detail the advantages and disadvantages of the two types of school for your child's future school career. At the same time, as a parent or guardian, you will have the opportunity to describe how you see your child. You also know your child from other life situations and naturally associate the choice for your child with wishes and hopes for their future school career.

It is up to you to decide on the most suitable type of school for your child. However, you must have taken part in the counseling session offered. If you do not take part in the parental consultation, the elementary school will assign your child to a type of school.

The child must attend the 4th grade or move on to the 5th grade.

You will receive a selection form and additional information from the Bremerhaven elementary school in good time. It is essential that you indicate three different preferred schools. The first, second and third choices represent a ranking order. If you have only chosen one school and your child cannot be admitted to this preferred school, it will no longer take part in the further admission procedure for the second and third choice and will be assigned to a school by the education authority.

The admissions procedure for Year 5 is managed centrally by the Bremerhaven Education Authority using a technology-supported system. This means that in the order of first to third choice, the admission procedure is carried out for all children per school one after the other and anonymously.

If there are enough school places available, all children are admitted, regardless of the performance criteria or the regular allocation of elementary school.

If the demand exceeds the admission capacity of the school, the so-called admission procedure is carried out. A distinction is made between the Gymnasium and the Oberschule.

The admission procedure for the secondary school

1. Initially, up to 10% of the available places may be allocated to hardship cases.
2. Subsequently, up to a third of the total number of places available are allocated to pupils from the assigned elementary school whose learning development report for the school semester of year 4 shows performance above the regular standard in the subjects German and mathematics.
3. Thereafter, the children from the assigned elementary school are considered without regard to the performance criterion.
4. If there are still places available, children from other elementary school can also be accepted.

If the number of applications within a group exceeds the number of places available for this group, the decision is made by drawing lots within the respective group.

The admission procedure for the grammar school

1. Initially, up to 10% of the available places may be allocated to hardship cases.
2. Subsequently, pupils whose learning development report for the school semester of year 4 shows performance above the regular standard in the subjects German and mathematics will be admitted.
3. If there are still places available, the other children can also be admitted.

If the number of applications within a group exceeds the number of places available for this group, a lottery will be held within this group.

Once the admission procedure has been completed, you will receive a notification from the receiving school.

• There is no guarantee of admission to one of the preferred schools.
• Separate admission formalities apply for pupils with special educational needs "perception and development".
• Families will receive all information from the elementary school they attend in January at the latest.
