In the city of Bremerhaven, bonfires, Easter fires and other fires based on custom or cult may only be lit with the permission of the local police authority.

The burning of the fire can cause disadvantages or dangers for people, animals and environmental goods, such as groundwater, nature and landscape, water and air, which must be consistently prevented in each individual case. The following conditions must therefore always be observed when burning the fire:

1. The fire must be set up on a non-combustible surface.
2. The distance to buildings and flammable objects must be at least 5 meters.
3. A bonfire must not exceed 1 meter in diameter.
4. The fire must not be fanned or maintained by fuels.
5. The fire must be supervised by an adult who knows how to use a fire extinguisher for the entire duration of the fire.
6. To prevent the fire from spreading, a suitable extinguishing agent must be kept readily visible and easily accessible.
7. Dangerous flying sparks must be avoided. If sparks fly into endangered areas, the fire must be extinguished immediately. The fire must not be lit in strong winds.
8. Once the fire has been extinguished, do so thoroughly with water. Follow-up checks must be carried out.

Depending on local law, fires may only be permitted for a specific occasion and at a specific time, for example Easter fires.

Bonfires may also be generally prohibited in the vicinity of thatched houses or in spa areas. An organizer must be appointed who is responsible for compliance with the regulations (e.g. fire safety, registration of the event).

You can apply for permission via the online service or in writing.

The application must contain the following information:

• Name and address of the organizer of the person (private individual or organization) making the notification
• Name and address, telephone and fax/email of the organizer
• Owner of the property
• Exact burning day
• Intended time
• Exact location of the fire
• Size of the fire
• Distance to schools, kindergartens, hospitals, old people's homes, buildings and structures with increased risk of explosion and fire.
• Distance from residential buildings, buildings with recreation rooms, buildings with soft roofs, campsites and other recreational facilities, oil and gas production sites and energy supply facilities (including power lines)
• Distances to forests, hedgerows, heaths and drained moors, roads and other public traffic areas (unless used exclusively for agricultural and forestry traffic)
• Distances to other buildings and groves, such as windbreaks, rows of trees and individual trees

Online service

• You do not need to register or create an account.
• You fill in the mandatory fields of the online service.
• You will receive a confirmation e-mail to the e-mail address you provided.

In writing (by e-mail, by post, by fax):

• You submit your application to the competent authority in digital or analog form.
• Please provide us with the mandatory information.
• Send the application to the competent authority by post, e-mail or fax.

Subsequently:

• The competent authority processes your application and forwards it to the local authorities (police, fire department) with comments if necessary. In addition, the authority can consult with the natural and legal persons involved in your project. They will provide feedback with possible indications of restrictive orders or risks to public safety that may justify such orders or a ban.
• A permit or rejection, including a decision on costs, is then issued and sent back to the applicant.
