If you are temporarily unable to continue running your household due to illness or other circumstances and no other person in the household can take over, you can apply for help to continue running the household.
If you are temporarily unable to continue running your household due to an emergency - be it because of illness, imprisonment, recuperation measures or even after a death - and no other person in the household can take over, you can apply for help to continue running the household from the social welfare provider responsible for you. You can receive this assistance if it is necessary and sensible to continue running the household.
Assistance for the continuation of the household is a subordinate form of assistance. It is based on your income and assets. It is only granted if there is no priority assistance, such as care assistance in accordance with the seventh chapter of SGB XII, educational assistance in accordance with § 27 SGB VIII or health insurance benefits. Health insurance companies, for example, may pay for household help if a child under the age of 12 or a disabled child who is dependent on help lives in the household. Only if the health insurance benefits do not help or are not provided can the social welfare benefits come into play.
As a rule, help with maintaining the household is only intended to provide temporary support. You can therefore only apply for it for a transitional period. This restriction does not apply if the assistance can avoid or postpone placement in an inpatient facility.
- Documents for the means test and subordination test
The evidence required largely corresponds to that required for the decision to grant assistance under SGB XII (including assistance with living expenses). In practice, a fully completed and signed social assistance application with details of the special benefit requirements and the financial situation must therefore be submitted as a rule - if only because of the means test and subordination check.
- Neither you as the head of the household nor another person in the household can continue to run the household due to a temporary emergency.
- It is necessary and sensible to continue running the household, for example because you are looking after underage, school-age children.
- You are dependent on the support because you cannot finance the help in the household yourself.
- The help is only necessary on a temporary basis. This restriction does not apply if the assistance enables you to avoid or postpone placement in an inpatient facility.
Assistance can only be granted from the point at which the competent authority becomes aware of the applicant's need for assistance. The need should be reported as soon as possible.
After the application has been reviewed, the applicant will receive a legally binding decision from the responsible office.
