If you want to set up a construction site as a company, you must comply with the official regulations.

Before work begins, the contractor must obtain instructions from the competent authority (with the submission of a traffic sign plan) on how the work site is to be cordoned off and marked and how traffic is to be restricted, regulated and directed.

An application must be submitted to the traffic authority for the traffic safety measures to be ordered.

• Written application
• Proof of the required specialist knowledge in accordance with the leaflet on general conditions for the specialist knowledge required for traffic safety at road works (MVAS)
• Traffic sign plan (either standard plan of the RSA or individual)

Which traffic measures are required to secure the work site must always be checked on a case-by-case basis. The contractor and the road traffic authority have access to the guidelines for securing work sites on roads (RSA) as well as standard plans for all possible safety measures.

Those responsible for traffic safety and the operation and troubleshooting of any signal systems must provide evidence of the necessary specialist knowledge in accordance with the information sheet on the general conditions for the specialist knowledge required for traffic safety at road works (MVAS). The ordering authority may allow exceptions to this rule for work with a minor impact on traffic.

• The contractor must check which road safety measures are necessary and appropriate during the planning phase of the work site based on the local conditions.
• A written application must then be submitted to the traffic authority for the traffic safety measures to be ordered. The application can be submitted using the online form, informally by e-mail, fax or post.
• The traffic authority examines the application and the documents submitted and consults the authorities to be involved (police and road construction authority).
• If necessary, a site visit will be carried out with all parties involved in order to coordinate the necessary measures on site.
• The necessary measures are then ordered by the traffic authority to be carried out by the contractor.
