Private vocational academies represent an alternative to university studies. They offer at least 3 years of science-related and at the same time practice-oriented training. The degree title "Bachelor" to be achieved there is equivalent to a university Bachelor's degree and entitles the holder to a Master's degree at a university.
Would you like to establish and operate a non-state educational institution as a vocational academy? For this, you must apply for state recognition. With state recognition, the Berufsakademie may, within the framework of recognition:
- take exams,
- award degree titles (Bachelor, Diplom Berufsakademie (BA)) and
- Issue certificates.
Hint:
- State recognition entitles the educational institution to use the designation "Berufsakademie" or a designation referring to a Berufsakademie. The designations used by the Berufsakademie must avoid confusion with higher education institutions. The English name is "University of Cooperative Education".
- The Land of Hesse may grant subsidies to bodies responsible for state-recognised vocational academies if:
- a special interest of the Land in funding is determined,
- the courses offered are accredited, are in accordance with the plans of the universities and vocational academies of the State of Hesse and there is agreement with the Ministry responsible for economics,
- the non-profit status under tax law is recognised by the competent tax authority and
- provision is made for exemption from tuition fees for some of the particularly qualified students.

- it must be possible for persons with disabilities and older people to reach the Berufsakademie in a barrier-free manner and to use them without outside assistance, provided that this does not entail disproportionate additional costs; otherwise, the Berufsakademie must ensure that the above-mentioned group of persons can take advantage of the courses offered by means of organisational measures.
- As a rule, teachers must have the qualifications required to teach as a professor or as a lecturer at a university of applied sciences. 40 per cent of the teaching activities at the Berufsakademie are to be carried out by full-time teachers. In exceptional cases, professors at universities of applied sciences and universities can also be counted within 3 years of state recognition, if they teach at a vocational academy in the exercise of a secondary activity, if they also ensure continuity in the range of courses and the consistency of the overall education as well as mandatory supervision and advice for students.
- The Berufsakademie offers at least 2 different courses of study, each with several specialist focuses. This does not apply if the establishment of specialist focal points is not suggested within a course of study by the corresponding professional field of activity.
- The Berufsakademie shall have a Board of Trustees which shall participate in decisions on the development of the Berufsakademie and on all questions of fundamental importance concerning it and which shall at least include representatives of the competent Chamber of Industry and Commerce or another professional chamber, employers' and employees' organisations, companies involved in the training, teachers working at the Berufsakademie and students. belong to.
You must apply for state recognition at the competent authority. The written form is not required by law for the application. However, due to the extensive documents required, you must submit the application in writing.
If the prerequisites are met and if accreditation/evaluation is successful, you will receive a notification of recognition. The recognition determines the name, seat and sponsor of the Berufsakademie as well as the recognised courses of study.
Hint: If you want to make significant changes subsequently (e.g. expansion by further courses of study, change of institution), you must obtain the consent of the responsible authority.

State recognition may be limited in time and subject to conditions.
Revocation and withdrawal of state recognition
The Ministry of Science may revoke recognition if:
- the conditions for recognition are no longer met, and
- You do not remedy this defect in due time despite being requested to do so.
Expiry of state recognition
State recognition expires if the Berufsakademie ceases to operate.
- not opened within a reasonable period determined by the competent ministry
- does not operate for more than one year without the consent of the Ministry of Science, or
- definitively discontinues it.
