If a pupil has been identified as having a need for special educational support in a corresponding procedure (AO-SF procedure), he or she will be taught at a mainstream school and receive special educational support or attend a special school with the corresponding special educational focus if the parents choose the special school. The AO-SF procedure determines the special education focus(es) if such a need is identified. Subsequently, the need for special educational support is reviewed at least once a year.
There are special schools in all seven special educational needs areas (learning, emotional and social development, language, physical and motor development, intellectual development, hearing and communication, vision).
Special educational support is provided either with the same goals in the general school curricula or with different goals in the learning and intellectual development curricula.
The head teacher decides on admission to a special school.
