Has your ID card been stolen? Then you must report this. You must also apply for a new ID card if you are over 16 years old and do not have a valid passport document.

You can report the theft to any identity card authority. As a rule, you should contact your local citizens' office. If you report the theft to the police, you must go to the ID card office to apply for a new ID card.

If you do not apply for your new ID card at your main place of residence, but at another citizens' office, you will need an important reason. You will also have to pay a surcharge. If you contact your chosen Citizens' Registration Office in advance, you can find out whether and to what extent the Citizens' Registration Office will accept your reason.

• for children under the age of 16:
  • if applicable, a declaration of consent from the parent with custody who is not present
  • if there is only one parent or legal guardian, additional proof of custody

• Your ID card has been stolen.
• You must apply for a new identity card if you
  • have German citizenship,
  • have reached the age of 16,
  • are registered in Germany
  • have no other valid passport document, i.e. no passport or temporary passport.
• For applications outside your main place of residence:
  • You must provide an important reason why you are not applying for the ID card at the ID card authority that is responsible at your main place of residence.

You must apply for a new ID card after theft in person:

• You make an appointment at your local citizens' office.
• You bring the necessary documents with you.
• You pay the fee.
• When you apply, your Citizens' Registration Office will inform you when you can collect your ID card.
• You will receive a new transport PIN by letter to make your online ID function ready for use with the newly requested ID card. You decide when you want to use this option.

You must apply for a new ID card as soon as possible after the theft if you do not have another valid ID document.

There are no indications or special features.

• The theft of the ID card must be reported to a police authority or an ID card authority, for example at the Citizens' Registration Office / Residents' Registration Office / Town Hall / Citizens' Services.   • EUR 22.80 for applicants under the age of 24
  • EUR 10.00 for the temporary identity card
  • 13.00 EUR surcharge for applications submitted outside office hours or not at the main place of residence
  • 30.00 EUR surcharge for issuance by consular or diplomatic representation abroad
