If you are pregnant, you are legally entitled to ten preventive medical check-ups and to additional examinations if these are necessary from a medical point of view.
The aim of medical care is to avert potential risks to the life and health of the mother or child, and to recognise and treat health problems in good time. The primary aim is the early detection of high-risk pregnancies and high-risk births.
Point of Contact
- the treating gynaecologist
- Screening costs: none (for those with statutory health insurance)
- Examinations that go beyond the normal preventive check-ups and examinations as part of prenatal diagnostics: vary. You will receive an invoice from your doctor for the examination carried out. Laboratory costs will be invoiced by the laboratory.
If you are privately insured, you should enquire with your health insurance company to find out which services are covered.
Note: If you do not have insurance cover, the costs may be covered by the social welfare office (Sozialamt).
Preventive Check-Ups
- The antenatal check-ups are initially once a month. From the 33rd week of pregnancy every 14 days. If you are working, you must be released from work for all check-ups without any loss of earnings.
- Three ultrasound examinations are scheduled as part of prenatal care: usually in the third, sixth and eighth month of pregnancy. If there are certain risks or complications, more frequent ultrasound examinations may be ordered.
Prenatal Diagnostics
- Prenatal diagnostic examinations, which are used to detect foetal malformations, infections, familial diseases and chromosomal abnormalities, are not part of the normal preventive medical check-ups.
- The doctor must inform you of the possibilities of prenatal diagnostics if certain risks are present, for example if you are already 35 years or older. The decision to undergo prenatal diagnostics is entirely up to you - you should therefore seek detailed advice on the type and purpose of the test.
Mother's Pass (Mutterpass)
- The Mutterpass is issued at the first check-up.
- The results of all examinations will be entered in this during the rest of the pregnancy. You should always carry your Mutterpass with you during your pregnancy and bring it with you to every medical examination and delivery.
