If anything changes with regard to your ID card or the data entered on it, you must report this immediately.
The data on your ID card must always be up to date, otherwise it will become invalid. In addition, as a German citizen, you are obliged to have an ID card from the age of 16.
You are therefore obliged to notify the Citizens' Registration Office of the following:
- name changes
- if you have lost your identity card
- if your identity card has been stolen
- if you have found your ID card again after reporting it lost
- Note: You can also report the loss or theft of your ID card to the police.
There are 2 exceptions:
- If your address or height changes, your ID card remains valid.
- If you do not comply with the obligation to register a new address within Germany, you are committing an offense.
in the event of a change of data, e.g. change of name:
- Proof of the new name by means of a new civil status certificate (e.g. marriage certificate, extract from the registry office about the new name)
- Biometric photograph
You will not incur any costs as a result of the notification.
If you report a change of name, fees may be incurred as the document must be reissued if you do not have a valid passport with the new name.
Report the change, loss, theft or subsequent recovery to a citizens' office. You can also report loss and theft to the police.

- Citizens are obliged to notify the Citizens' Office about their identity card:
- Change of personal data (exception: address, height)
- Theft (can also be reported to the police)
- Loss (can also be reported to the police)
- Recovery after reporting the loss

- responsible:
- in case of change of data (e.g. name): any identity card authority (citizens' office)
- in the event of loss/theft: any identity card authority (citizens' office) or the police
