Do you urgently need a passport and neither a regular nor an express passport can be issued in time? Then you can apply for a temporary passport.

You can only have a temporary passport issued in justified individual cases. It can be issued and handed over immediately. It can only ever be issued if it is no longer possible to apply for a passport in time - even using the express procedure (maximum production time 72 hours) - and it cannot be issued in time for the first use. The passport authorities may require the submission of suitable evidence.

The application of minors must be approved in writing by both parents (as long as they have joint custody). In the case of unmarried or divorced parents, consent may be given by the parent to whom the family court has granted sole parental custody of the child. The decision of the family court must be submitted with the application. Furthermore, in the case of minors, one parent may sign at the time of application and the other parent may sign at the time of collection.

  • Note: From May 1, 2025, only digitally available biometric photographs will be used for new official documents. The photographs will either be taken at the authority or by photographers. It is therefore no longer possible for citizens to bring their own photograph with them.

• If applicable, a civil status certificate (for unmarried persons: Birth certificate; for married persons or persons who have been married: Marriage certificate) may be required, for example if the spelling of your name is unclear. The submission of family registers is also accepted.

It is no longer possible to issue a regular or express passport in time.

• You must come in person to apply for a passport (e-passport).
• The application will be completed on the spot with the clerk. All you have to do is sign it.
• The personal appearance is essential because of the handwritten signature on the application form and the identity check. You can prove your identity with an official photo ID. This is usually the identity card or the previous passport.
• However, the passport can also be collected by a person authorized in writing who must provide proof of identity.

The provisional document is usually issued immediately.
