The health insurance fund covers the costs of the screening examinations and tests required during pregnancy.
Statutory prenatal care includes a detailed consultation in which your doctor will ask you about personal and family illnesses, your current state of health and your life situation. As part of the physical examination, your weight and blood pressure will also be measured and a blood and urine sample taken.
Following the initial examination, the doctor will issue a maternity pass. All data that is important for pregnancy and birth is noted in this.
After the initial examination, further check-ups are initially carried out every four weeks. In the last two months of pregnancy, the interval is shortened to around two weeks. The doctor will check the baby's heartbeat and your weight at each appointment. The hemoglobin content of your blood will also be monitored. Tests for an infection with hepatitis B (HBs antigen) and screening for gestational diabetes (glucose tolerance test) will also be carried out during the course of the pregnancy.
Other services include an ultrasound examination in the first, second and third trimester of pregnancy and screening for gestational diabetes.
None. Services that go beyond adequate, appropriate and economical care are not paid for by the health insurance fund.
The statutory prenatal care includes
- a detailed initial examination (consultation, physical examination including weight, blood pressure, blood and urine test)
- Following the initial examination, the doctor issues the maternity pass. This records all examination results, relevant illnesses, hospital stays, the date and course of the birth and, finally, the first details about the newborn.
- Further check-ups take place every four weeks during the first seven months of pregnancy, and every two weeks thereafter

- from the sixth month of pregnancy, a screening for gestational diabetes
