For each electoral district, an official electoral register is kept by the municipality. It lists all citizens who are entitled to vote on election day. As a general rule, eligible voters who are registered as having their main residence in the municipality on the 42nd day before the election are entered in the voters' register ex officio. The municipality will send you a voter notification no later than the 21st day before the election.
If you have not received a voter's notification by the 21st day before the election, you should immediately check with your municipality whether you are registered on the electoral roll. If this is not the case, you can apply for registration.
If you have a different situation, e.g. moving to the municipality after the 42nd day before the election or permanent residence as a secondary residence, please contact the municipal election authority immediately.
Anyone who is entitled to vote on election day
- is a German citizen or a citizen of another member state of the European Union,
- has reached the age of 16,
- has his permanent residence in the electoral area or otherwise habitually resides and does not have a residence in the federal territory, and
- is not excluded from the right to vote.
You can consult the electoral roll from the 20th to the 16th day before the election on weekdays during the general opening hours of your municipality. Within this period, you can also request a correction of the electoral roll in order to be registered. You can do this in writing or in person (for transcription) at the municipality.
Your application must contain at least the following information and be signed by hand:
- First name and surname
- Date of birth
- Exact address
- Wording "Application for registration on the electoral roll"
The municipality will then re-examine the requirements for your eligibility to vote. If registration is possible, you will immediately receive an election notification. You can also apply for a polling card. If your application is not successful, you will be notified as soon as possible.
You can submit the application no later than 15 days before the election (§ 15 para. 1 BbgKWahlV)
