The purpose of preventive dental care is to examine the teeth and oral cavity in detail in order to be able to detect and treat possible dental, oral and jaw diseases at an early stage.
Preventive dental care is aimed at all insured persons and serves to be able to detect and treat any dental, oral and maxillofacial diseases at an early stage.
For children:
- up to the age of 6: six times, of which three in infancy (6th to the completed 9th month of life 10th to the completed 20th month of life 21st to the completed 33rd month of life)
- between 6 and 18 years: once every six months
For adults:
- from 18 years of age once a year
- some health insurance companies offer different benefits
The dental prophylaxis measures for adults include
- instruction on effective oral hygiene
- advice on how to reduce risk factors, and
- the removal of hard plaque and caries or irritants that can cause gingivitis.

Measures that exceed sufficient, appropriate and economic care are paid by the insured persons themselves.
You can appeal against the decision of the health insurance fund. If the appeal is not upheld, you can file a lawsuit with the competent social court.
- Six examinations for children up to 6 years of age, three of them in infancy.
- First examination from 6 to 9 months of age, second examination from 10 to 20 months of age, third examination from 21 to 33 months of age.
- bThree further dental check-ups before the age of six: The intervals of the early detection examinations are coordinated with the medical early detection examinations U5 to U7 according to the Children's Guideline of the G-BA.
