Housing benefit is intended to enable you to have adequate and family-friendly housing.

- Rent subsidy for tenants or subtenants of living space or for residents of a home (residents of a home as defined by the respective state law; this also includes people with disabilities who are not only temporarily admitted to special forms of housing to provide integration assistance) or as
- Burden subsidy for owners of a home or condominium.
- Citizen's allowance,
- basic security,
- in case of incapacity for work,
- Help with living expenses or
- additional transfer services that take your accommodation costs into account.
You must provide evidence of all information you provided in your application for housing benefit.

- Application for rent subsidy - proof of housing costs
- rental agreement
- Rent change letter (current rent composition)
- Rental receipt (e.g. bank statement)

- Purchase, leasehold or usage agreement
- Land register extract
- Property tax assessment
- Living space calculation according to DIN 277 or the Living Space Ordinance (WoFIV; building application)
- Proof of the purchase price or construction costs (including modernizations)
- Loan agreements and repayment plans (payment receipt)
- if applicable, proof of the amount of ground rent
- if applicable, proof of income from the transfer of rooms and areas to third parties
- if applicable, notice of child benefit for building a house
You must generally submit proof of household income:
- Notices regarding transfer benefits (e.g. citizen's allowance, assistance with living expenses, social security, basic security in old age and in cases of reduced earning capacity, benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act)
- Certificate of earnings for the application for housing benefit and three current pay slips (also for mini-jobs),
- Proof of recurring annual special payments (e.g. Christmas and vacation bonuses)
- current notices of pension payments of any kind,
- Notices of benefits under the Third Book of the Social Code - Employment Promotion (for example, unemployment benefit I, short-time working allowance, transitional allowance),
- Notices regarding sick pay and other wage replacement benefits,
- Notices about parental allowance
- Capital gains (interest, dividends)
- Approval or rejection notices for BAföG / BAB
- Certificate of enrollment for students
- Monthly contributions from parents or other persons during studies or training
- Forms and final tax assessment for self-employed/business owners.
Evidence of allowances and deductions:
- Increased advertising expenses must be proven according to the tax assessment
- Proof of health insurance,
- Proof of pension or life insurance,
- Fulfillment of basic pension periods
- Childcare costs (no school fees)
- Expenses for the fulfilment of legal maintenance obligations,
- Severely disabled person's ID card (if applicable, proof of care allowance payments)
You are entitled to a housing benefit subsidy if:
- Tenant of residential property,
- Subtenant of living space,
- Resident of a cooperative or foundation apartment,
- Resident of a home,
- Tenant-like usufructuary holders, in particular holders of a tenancy-like permanent right of residence,
- Owner of an apartment building (three or more apartments), a commercial building or a business, if you live in this building,
- Owner of a single-family or two-family house in which you live, but which also contains business premises to such an extent that it can no longer be considered a home,
- Holder of a full-time agricultural job, the residential part of which is not separated from the business part,
- A woman living in a women’s shelter, even if the remuneration is calculated on a daily basis or
- A person who has been placed in homeless shelters or in third-party accommodation by the homeless authority, even if the usage fee (which is not, for example, based on the number of days or staggered according to adults and children) is paid to the homeless authority.
- Owner of a home or condominium,
- Owner of a small settlement,
- Owner of a part-time agricultural business,
- Owner of a full-time agricultural establishment, if the residential and business areas are separate and a housing benefit calculation can be made for the residential part,
- Holder of a permanent right of residence similar to ownership or
- Holders of the leasehold and those who are entitled to the transfer of ownership of the building or apartment or to the transfer or grant of the leasehold.

- You can apply for housing benefit in writing or online.
- Submit the application with all required documents to the responsible authority.
- The responsible authority will review your application and documents. If necessary, they will request additional documents or information from you.
- Once all the necessary documents have been submitted, the responsible authority will decide on your application and calculate your housing benefit entitlement.
- You will receive a notification.
- If approved, you will receive housing benefit.
The responsible office will process your application as quickly as possible. How long it takes depends on how complete your information is and whether all the necessary documentation is available. If processing takes longer, you will not be disadvantaged. Your housing benefit entitlement will be reviewed from the date you submit your application. You will not lose any housing benefit if you are entitled to it.
Submit your application no later than the last day of the month in which you wish to start receiving housing benefit. You will generally receive housing benefit from the first of the month in which your application was submitted to the housing benefit office (date stamp).
